As a community we're getting old. I'm 26 so I'm certainly up there. I'm very much of the same opinion. Sure during a heated battle you'll yell some profanity and what not. But I don't see the value in yelling it continually. In some cases it adds to the atmosphere, in others it does not. A suggestion might be to politely tap on the persons shoulder and explain. I must admit, at 4am it was deathly quiet with the exception of the fan's humming from PC cooling. Quietest I've ever heard it sitting up at night

If they are using speakers, grab one of us from the front desk and we'll investigate it.

I understand, I realize we had options of asking the already busy staff to come and sort out people etc... THe point to my post was for the people who are causing the problems to be more "self aware"

QUOTE
Have a look in the gaming thread, I've written a small post on how to try to combat the issue the best we can

Yes my friends and I understand we are all Network / Comms / Systems Engineers..... we required steam online for an obscure game we tried to play and the choice to go "back online" was the only way to sort the issue, but as many others once we tried to go back online we lost our credientials so going back "offline" took some time but we got there in the end... The steam thing was not a big deal probably chewed up an hour of gaming time but thems the break. We do normally bring our own wireless dongle for these issue's but we all managed to forget them.

QUOTE
Actually, whilst they are not visibly present with laminated numbers. One of the admin's and a close friend of the admin team are both registered and appropriately licensed security personnel who can step in and act as security if the need rises. This hasn't happened in the years I've attended events there and in the 5 Respawn events I've helped run. But its there IF its needed.

Yeah for sure no doubt you guys have got it covered. As i said we chose not to take action into our own hands as we are most of the time fairly mature people but again not a threat but the people envolved need to consider others. It should not have to be about dobbing and teacher student go to the corner type stuff. We had a polite word in my mind that should have been enough.... Too much sugar...

Anyways to the organizers, Tank etc really happy with everything (hoodie is great!! ..... )

To the Tools yelling out... try to lower the volume and consider others next time round....

Thanks Jeffy

Serpentine, you sound like the kind of guy I could get along with. smile.gif

I'm 27, half way to 28, and I hate all the things you mentioned in your post (and like Pantera tongue.gif).
I was getting real angry at the guys behind me, as I stated in this thread already, yelling stupid shit out to the people making announcements, and yelling at each other, even though they were 1-2 seats away from each other.

Most of that stuff is completely unneccesary... and really made me hate where I was sitting.

Agreed mate we generally pick that back corner as it's away from the general noise.... It's a shame for me that an hour or two after i left the place was ghost town.... I just couldn't stand it anymore....

Anyways the other respawns I have had a much more enjoyable time hence why i keep comming back.... I'm going to put this one behind me and hope the next one brings more joy for my friends and I.

See ya at the next one maybe...

Personal experiences:
* Lights were on way too late - 2am is a resonable time to kill them as all comps are suppose to have finished according to the website I read.
* Announcements weren't made for the later comps for when they started, I noticed this especially for poker. Suggestion is for a global announcement for every competition to be made though the notification system as well as the speaker system
* Check-in, I arrived 30 min late with almost no queue to get in. Pre-Paid line was easy and simple. Though I do agree with a option for the players in the top 400 for example for a 400 person lan to be able to pre-pay. This ensures fairness as well as allows people who want to pay to be able to do so.
* Sell nerf guns and bullets at the venue - makes for more fun to shoot the vuvuzella blowers, although I don't think the vuvuzella will show it's face again as it was a world cup thing
* Admins were awesome and to me very helpful, kudos to you for running an awesome event

That's what you think... wink.gif

You came and sat next to me as your CSS was not working (just to be clear on who you are) If you want to yell penis over and over again stay home....I had brand new headphones on, with the sound up full with Pantera on in the background and you still managed to penetrate and completely pierce my ear drums. Seriously grow up or at the very least make an attempt to consider others.

I don't really have much input this time, but just wanted to point out this paragraph. I will now investigate who it was, since it clearly was not me. (My dress was black, and wasn't yelling penis every fives seconds. Derp.)

Apart from that, it wasn't all that bad... Except I didn't know how to play 2/3 of the Girl's comp games. And the game I did know how to play wasn't what I was expecting (I miss GG ;-; )

If I can get a seat reserved along the left edge of the hall (for wheel room) I'll bring my G25 again and hit you up on DC so you can give it a whirl with that stand.

If all goes well I'll have a new 27" monitor by then (depending on tax return) so it won't be as painful as a 22". smile.gif

I think everybody is aware of that, but there's a point where it's just too much... and too many people are going beyond that point and annoying others around them without any consideration. I believe that's roughly the point he was making.

I'll be honest sure there are people who shout alot, i do it too, but honestly i'm hearing alot of grumpy old men talk tongue.gif :>

Get some proper noise cancelling headphones if you can hear people through them. Sure if people are playing consoles and intruding on your space that's fair enough get them dealt with, but shouting and such is expected and always happens it's just the nature of the majority of the crowd no matter what game or age. So honestly, reading the posts on complaining about noise and such is almost as bad as the noise..
If you are going to complain about noise and profanity then be consistent and complain about the utter shit and rudeness and penis on DC, i like to think people at respawn are pretty much chill and it's fun to muck around specially because you can bullshit and people bullshit with you.
Just deal with it and move on lol.

As for lights, sure 2am is a fine time but need to make sure the major comps are done before that gets done. IMO i would like to say i know for a fact that the tf2 comp wasn't done by 2am, it had hardly started so the lights should have been on longer. The light were off well before the comp finished. TF2 seems to be a comp which no matter how popular it gets it gets pushed on the back burner.
If you can't sleep with lights on buy one of those things that go over your eyes or just take them from an airline :>. There is so much ambient light in the place anyway.

I also noticed that this time there were a LOT more people gone by sunday morning so moving a major comp like TF2 to then would surely kill it.

The lan was fine sure it had it's issues but i know i enjoyed myself thoroughly. I think the key is (for grumpy people young and old tongue.gif ) to just let things go? Try to loosen up or wrap yourselves in sound proof bubble wrap and then attend, (once again bullshitting don't take things so seriously)

Deodorant! Maybe you should add deodorants to the list of things that are sold at respawn like mini travel ones :>

I have to say I really enjoyed the lan this time round

The hourly fun comps are great smile.gif

I do have two suggestions however

First

The Respawn Notifier is a great idea, but perhaps what players also need is a similar system to advertise that they are running a particular game server. I read in this thread that that gamers had to walk around to see what other people were playing.

For example, if I were to run an Unreal Tournament server, but don't want to sit in the lobby waiting for someone to join, it would be good to be notified that people want to join it, but until I get a notification I can go about other things.

On the flip side, people register their interest in particular games and are notified that a server is running so they can join.

Does this make sense? Would you find this useful? A sort of game lobby/notifier so people know what's being played (besides CS).

I believe the current method is to announce over DC and hope it is noticed between the constant stream of nonsense and policy speeches by "Julia Gillard (PM)". tongue.gif

Second

My friend insisted we join in a CS team this lan. Our first match was against Sublime, and of course we got thoroughly beaten. I swear they had synchronised flashbangs. Anyway...

I second the idea of an "amateur" CS competition but with the following suggestions:
  • No prize - competitive teams won't bother joining unless they really like fighting amateurs for no prize money.
  • It is not organised by admins, but by the people who are interested in said amateur competition.

My $0.02 + GST.

Looking forward to the next lan.

+1 for rangers reply.

AND:

Also what realy pissed me off was dickheads in the cod comp.

you get strays jumping into the servers.

may i suggest that a password could be implimented to prevent such a massive waste of time

i had two people that couldnt join my server because we had two idiots in the server, went and told admins and they were still there, had to go tell admins a second time, then my other two members could jump in.

password protection :told to the two competing teams prehaps?

I went home around 2am with a splitting headache. and I can say the turkey's sitting around the back corner in the isle / corridor away from the main area you were "THIS CLOSE" to having you keyboards wrapped around your necks. The only reason i didn't was because i "might consider" coming to respawn again and beating 6 little nerds to a pulp would perhaps see me barred from the event.

Just wanted to point out that saying that you were "THIS CLOSE" to doing something like that doesn't seem to bode well with me and if you are having thoughts like that, that maybe next time you should reconsider your attendance to respawn on the basis that you might not be able to control yourself. Most of us can have fun and be loud and be annoying to each other without things getting physical. If you feel that you are going to hulk out at someone with computer hardware please seriously reconsider your attendance, im not sure if i would feel safe knowing that you might not be able to control yourself.

Also new headphones fair enough but if you want to 'cancel noise' please make sure to actually buy 'noise cancelling' headphones. I would also like to say that i don't know the people you were talking about in your post but it really gets to me when people just can't get along. Being over 30 you should have learnt to tolerate things and idiots by now.

/agree. Maybe something like steam friends but without the steam, or the friends, just individual channels for each game that alerts you when people start playing a game from that channel you are in, and allows you to chat to other people in that channel.

Great as usual guys.

Only thing was network speeds were slow as hell, max I saw was 20MB/s off 2 people, was around 2 - 4 MB/s off everyone else.

V16 and 15 was mostly ~30-40MB/s and every so often a speed of 70 - 80 MB/s

Otherwise, keep up the great job biggrin.gif

To be honest drunkee's 'dickheadery' is part of what makes a lan into a good lan. Lans's are about having fun with your mates, playing some good games, and generally enjoying yourself.
Maybe it should be 1 strike to all the holier than thou straight faces for being such party killers.

You realise that noise cancelling headphones are only for constant background noise right? For example, the hum of 400 computers' fans going at top speed. Unless the people yelling penis were doing it non-stop, I don't think it would have helped. Especially if he was right next to them.

How about... IRC? It has channels and everything! People could pay attention to it for announcements and notifications of who was playing what, and could even make separate rooms for their friends or people they're playing with.

There is a small learning curve there, and people have to install the software. But I believe it was mentioned a while back that a browser-based client might be able to be implemented on the intranet site.

I also confirm that is was not me (i was in a Choose your own weapon t-shirt, Transformers hoodie and jeans) or Caylem (STFU Jumper)... did anyone ever find out who the chick in the white beanie was?? lol She was the talk of DC++ for like 5 hours...

Also, whoever mentioned that they left early because of headaches, i did the same.. I left at 8pm with a massive headache and little downloaded.. I think my network port thingy was a little dodgy as anytime one of the guys sitting on the hub table breathed it got knocked out.. causing me to have to get up and shove it back in or getting someone to do it for me. My apologies to the guys on that table (Possibly the Hindenberg Ground Crew?) I'm sure you got sick of me/Ceno interrupting you...

I would also like to point out the yelling was a little OTT... and I'm 23.. not old by a long shot.. and even i got sick of hearing "F'ing F&GGOT" or " F'ing C#NT" or any of the other 10 varieties every 5 seconds from the same group... I respect others in their choice of gaming vocabulary however, whether it be that i am entering the "old" crowd or merely brought up differently, it did get a little repetitive and at some times just plain unacceptable. Again, I am not having a go at those that choose to yell and scream, just providing a little feedback. i also know that admins cannot possibly police this, it's just not possible in a crowd of that size... though past experiences has proven that a nice PM to an admin is usually enough to get the culprit to realise they are bothering others. It may not happen immediately, however it does happen..

Overall I enjoyed this lan... it was a shame i had to bail early, but with a little bit of skill and a whole lot of luck next lan will be just as good, if not better..

Also, I think Nerf guns should make an appearance at the next lan... i got hit plenty of times and were able to shoot off a few rounds myself.. Note to those that oppose, sit at the back in the corner to ensure you are not affected by the nerf-i-ness.

*hugs*

I had not thought of IRC since I have about zero experience with it. Also, the idea was not really to provide chat facilities, but simple notifications like the Respawn Notifier.

However IRC could serve the purpose as long as a there is free client which will provide some sort of popup or sound notification (ie MSN/Windows Live). Otherwise, you will have to poll the channels for updates, which this idea is trying to avoid.

Cheers

I've been coming to these lans ever since Respawn Pirates. Every time it gets better, (with exception that with > people means no more dedicated console gaming like we had in the beginning with networked xboxes and guitar hero. Should definetely bring it back).

I would like to bring to everyones attention the fact that there are viruses on some people’s pcs at the lan.

I always virus scan my pc with up to date antivirus to ensure it is clean and no risk to other users. I contracted a virus during the night mad.gif (I didn’t even open an application) and I had to cut my lan short and go home which I didn’t want to do. I wasted my money and time all because someone didn’t keep his pc clean.

The virus was a self multiplying one called w32.rontokbro@mm. I have spent 4 days trying to clean my pc, I think it is done now but I’m scared to connect to the internet.

The admins must do something about this. When e-mail reminders go out to confirm and news items go up about new lans they should include a sentence stressing that people must virus scan their pc with up to date antivirus. And include it somewhere on the website.

It’s mainly for the lazy people or new people to respawn lan but it is important. This is not the first time a virus has been at the lan. Remember a while a go someones pc had a virus causing problems with the network. So people need to be reminded!

IRC does serve a purpose. I'm building an IRC server on my test machine at home (however the HDD died so now it's "virtual" until I fix it. Currently it'll do all of that. MIRC is free and does have the ability to alert through flashing and noise, but unless you configure it, it wont.

IRC is really just another platform WE CAN/WE WILL support because we run it. wink.gif I'll get it working and give the configuration to orsm sando to put into the main server we have wink.gif or we'll do something but I'd like to see it working because I've got it working at home for the LAN

Hey.

First Time going to Respawn. Had Great fun, Made some new friends, which is what i look for in a lan.

Overall it was good, except for the COD comp, When we where apparently Vsing Team Legacy and we ended up waiting over 20 minuets for the scrim, which in end apparently was a muck up in the group matches.
I reckon a set rules should be compulsory to read.
And that if a team doesn't show up after 10 minutes the Four fit.
anyway Was great got heaps of gaming done. Couple of new games and what not.

Cheers fellas.

EDIT - toose log out of my account plox.

First things first

IRC

we actually run an IRC server at the lan that can easily be access through our web based IRC client in the EMS. its simple to use even for the beginners. will make sure its easier to find next event.

VIRUS

whilst we recommend everyone runs A/V software there are many things that can be done to minimise this problem.

1st: turn off windows file sharing! especially if you have write access enabled!.

2nd: since none of the admin/gopher team seem'ed to cop the virus i can only assume that its either come from DC++ or let in via a poorly configured A/V software. and im willing to bet it was DC++.

whilst Respawn LAN no longer supports it i cannot stress enough if you are going to share files at ANY LAN expect to cop a virus! i can only assume that you have downloaded something that was infected and compromised your PC.

PS: get a better AV!

MiniWalks
Just something to note,

To the best of my knowledge, the cooling system was never turned on. we intermittently turn the fans on, but this is required due to smell, and also due to OH&S to keep fresh air moving through the venue.

In regards to the streaming,

We had 2 streams going at the event,
1 with the TV
1 with gamestah (atleast it was planned for them to be streamed)

With regard to the high traffic load,

It is an issue that we are looking into, we did have multicast snooping on this event, but this relies on the application sending the traffic actually marking it correctly, but it is known about, and is being looked into.

+1 to what dead_man said, get good AV, turn off ALL windows FS if in doubt.

need to have IRC to contact admins ASAP instead of people @ the opposite end of the venue constantly having to walk back and forth

Even with IRC, that doesn't mean instant contact to admins as they have their admin duties to preform. You could always post a thread on the EMS forums or PM them on that with your message to them

* Sell nerf guns and bullets at the venue - makes for more fun to shoot the vuvuzella blowers, although I don't think the vuvuzella will show it's face again as it was a world cup thing
* Admins were awesome and to me very helpful, kudos to you for running an awesome event

You know how hard it is to get nerf guns, right? tongue.gif (fyi; it's HARD wink.gif )

thanks very much everyone smile.gif

No they're not, they're at basically every toy shop you go into... I know for a fact they have them in Toys R Us.

trust me, that won't solve a thing, I hardly ever use irc at LANs and when I do I only look every few hours

I vote that if someone has a virus track them down and boot them out i only recently reformatted and i got one

Or you could get a decent scanner that picks things up before they have a chance to infect.
I've been using ESET Smart Security (paid for it) for 3 years, never had an issue, not at home, not at LANs. smile.gif

ive had just the same luck with Microsoft Security Essentials, which is free, it detected 2 or 3 things but deleted them before they did anything

My point is, it doesnt help any, you saying that you hvae good results with eset, being 1) paid and 2) one of the best av's out there. because most of the people at respawn that do end up getting virus's are... how would i say... not inclined to pay for an AV

Avast LiveCD
Best anti-virus I have ever used

Avast LiveCD?

I'm using Avast and it's doing an excellent job for me, very rarely encounter a virus threat, and in the case that I do, avast kicks in.
