Hi everyone,

Saw this online this morning: http://www.news.com.au/technology/apple-tr...0-1225909901032

Opinions anyone?

oh shit... ive jailbroken my iphone 4 too...

is it only a matter of time before they shut me down?
dead_man
well since it's not illegal to chip/jailbreak phone's/consoles in many countries what Apply are doing is technically illegal as it is damaging people's good they have purchased.

i smell a class action lawsuit following.

While modding may be legal, microsoft don't like people doing it. In their favour though, they don't lock down the console so it can't be used. The just ban access to xbox live.

This will hurt them more than anything.

The article you link does not mention anything about them implementing this - only patenting.

There are no laws against patenting stupid ideas - it is, in fact, very common for retarded ideas that will never see the light of day to be patented.

It's certainly not impossible they'll do this, in fact I'd say it's certainly plausible - just keep in mind they haven't done it yet (at least, that this article mentions)

Also guys... whats stopping the jailbreak community from patching this little annoyance out of the kernel anyway.

Well see apple.
Well see.

Apple went too far they day they started their company.

This shit scares me almost as much as pingu.

Yeah I think the've gone too far however the upside of this is that if Apple have the patent, nobody else can abuse the technology like this. For example, if someone wrote a virus for jailbroken phones to do just this, Apple could also sue them for patent infringement.
soulink
it definetly will not happen, a class action lawsuite would imediatly follow if this came into affect and i would be in on it biggrin.gif. Its just BS talk from apple trying to scare ppl biggrin.gif

If you buy and iphone, you OWN the phone not apple anymore, we can do what we want with it biggrin.gif

F@$K apple biggrin.gif

Apple, unlike, say, Sony, won't actually do it.

My way of looking at it, you may own the hardware, but they still own rights to the software, software development kit, and distribution of software and as such are within their rights to keep track of how their software is being modified and how widely modifications have been spread.

This sounds no different to the HTC or Samsung 'eFuse' if you try and "jailbreak", the eFuse pops and you're screwed... Except this time Jobs is breaching privacy doing it also... I think too far but hey.

But by the same token, if you REPLACE the software and SDK with a custom one that YOU own, this technology would almost certainly still function (as otherwise it would be too easy to circumvent).
(Edit: US precedent has ruled that jailbreaking is 100% legal anyway)

And instead of just allowing them to track which phones are hacked and notify the ISP, they actively, unnecessarily and aggressively violate your privacy. If a line serviceman for Telstra listened in on a conversation illegally he'd be fired on the spot and the company would press charges against him. Apple's proposal is a much deeper and much more serious breach of privacy; they can take images of you any time of day, no matter what you're doing and where you are. Make no mistake: what they're describing is extremely illegal.

As a result, I think it's extremely likely that they filed this patent as a publicity stunt to scare away jailbreakers. They're trying to frighten casual users who might have heard this as a rumour, or to tell the jailbreak/homebrew community that they could do all this if they really wanted to.

Anybody else seen the movie 'Eagle Eye'? Sounds familiar...

I have the solution guys. Just wear a Steve Jobs mask and use a Darth Vader voice changer.
