Respawn LANtheon wrap-up!

So, we've finally recovered after the LANtheon event. The most important thing?
Thanks for coming. Seriously.
When we run these events, we run it for you. If you didn't come, then we wouldn't be here. So it means a lot to us when each person walks through the door when we open them.
It was almost a last-minute decision for us; our existing venue was undergoing refurbishment works and our old booking was pulled; we found a venue at the same site that was able to accommodate and we threw down the gauntlet and said "let's do this". Challenge accepted.
The result? Respawn LANtheon, around 180 gamers rocked up, the atmosphere was really something else!
The new venue provided some great opportunities and challenges. Loading/unloading was a challenge for us so it took a bit longer for bump-in than we initially anticipated.
We dropped DOTA 2. Yes, we got a LOT of requests about restoring that tournament and you bet that this is just a temporary thing specific to the LANtheon special event; DOTA 2 will return to our lineup for our next event slated for late June. SMITE was popular and we thank Hi-Rez for their support. Lewis developed a game on the Saturday known as PNOG - it's pong with random rules that make it really challenging to play with a sense of random, a perfect way to give away the God Pack we received from Hi Rez to kickstart one gamer's SMITE experience.
Our sponsors showed their full support - GIGABYTE and NVIDIA contributed over $3000 worth of GPUS including their new GTX960, along with a solid contribution from Corsair (wow!), Fractal Design, Scorptec, Aerocool and Plantronics. We had some awesome demo systems set up including a GTX980 powering a 4K IPS display. This was the first time a lot of us saw a 4K gaming system and it's now testing my resolve to not dash down to Scorptec and pick one up after discovering that the 980 does a fantastic job of powering most games at 4K. The Corsair M65 gaming mice in white were unique - one of those would look fantastic alongside our white Fractal R4 demo system someday...
We've got a Fractal R5 case to show off next. Stay tuned for the review and comparison.
Had a play with DSR - Dynamic Super Resolution, the technology from NVIDIA which aims to beat anti-aliasing technology. The retention of detail is where this shines, in CS:GO, we would see tree branches disappear but with DSR, the branch detail remained. No, NVIDIA didn't ask us to say this. Yes, we think this technology is cool and creates a better gaming experience.
So, what's next from here?
We're planning two big events, one in June, one in September. We've got a new website on the way which will make the registration process a lot more straightforward and simple... and we've got some exciting features coming that we can't wait to show you.
We've created a Facebook community so we can all keep in touch between events. Meet-ups, pub nights etc are coming back. It's a closed group to prevent spammers; just request an add and one of us will add you pretty quickly.
Game on!

Respawn LAN: LANtheon! A Respawn LAN special event!
So most of us have heard by now that our regular venue is being closed for some eagerly awaited refurbishment. Meanwhile, we've moved to another (sadly, smaller) venue at La Trobe for our March event to bring you LANtheon!
Registrations are open - and we're working on bringing you details of what we have planned! |

Hey guys!
It's been a few weeks since our 32nd event, Candy LAN so we'd like to provide you with a brief rundown and re-cap from the last one and a glimpse into our future. In short: life is pretty sweet.
For Candy LAN, we turned our focus to our tournaments to look at better ways to spread the activities over a greater timespan. On the whole, this worked reasonably well but will still obviously require some tweaking to get things running a bit closer to the timetable. We introduced Hearthstone as a headline tournament which'll continue to be so and we'll be looking at dropping one major headliner before our next event to free up some resources.
NVIDIA and Gigabyte played a critical part in our event, providing prizes for our headlining Case Mod tournament taken out by a whisker after much discussion amongst our team by IMODTHINGS and very closely followed by the ROFL LAN team and Nuke with their vacuum cleaner system and the well-lit BitFenix Prodigy case which Zardoz seemed to go ape over. Yeah, that's me - I'm trying to write in the third person here. How am I doing? We cannibalised the two NVIDIA demo systems into one to give us a two-GPU setup to power eight LCD displays for an extreme surround gaming experience. We're hoping to do something like that again soon.
Other sponsors who supported our event include SteelSeries, Scorptec Computers, Corsair, Fractal Design, FUNC, Plantronics, TP-LINK and Anyware Computer Accessories. We'd like to thank them for their support - these guys make quality products that are worth checking out and we hope to have some more of their kit in the demo area for you guys to play with next time. Unfortunately the Corsair K70 RGB keyboard shipment was delayed but we'll get a review out to you guys once it arrives.
The Magic Draft looked fun! Khans of Tarkir is a killer set to draft - and a foil Sorin was pulled from that box - how's that for luck!
Hardware casualties include a six hour old Kogan 40" LCD TV which switched off at around the same time the smoke started to come out. Wish us luck with the RMA process...
We're just putting together the final pieces for the PC area at PAX Australia, where we are joined by PAX Enforcers and members from events Australia wide to run the PC freeplay, BYOC and tournament areas for PC, along with the rock-solid supporting network infrastructure we are known for. If you're going to PAX, please say hi!
What we're really trying to say here, is thanks to everyone who came. Without you guys, there wouldn't be us guys and we're ever so thankful to be able to share our passion for computer gaming, hardware and common interests with all of you.
The next event is coming up in March next year so we've got a bit of a break to work on a few behind-the-scenes projects which'll make Respawn far better next year. |
